Comix This Week: 8/27/2014

Comic books are one of the great loves of my life, and I hope that all of you enjoy this weekly jaunt into this amazing world. As with my movie reviews, this is not comprehensive. I cannot afford to read every comic, nor will I illegally download them, I respect the medium too much for that, but I don’t judge any who do. Every week there will be a “pick of the week”, what I feel is the essential comic of my purchases. At the end of the year, I will review my picks and choose a top 5 comics of the year.

I use cover images in my reviews. These images are from various comic companies, such as Marvel, DC, and Image in today’s case. They own this stuff. I do this for fun, not money.Enjoy.

Wolverine 12 (final issue)

detail

The final issue of Wolverine volume 37…

Wolverine faces off against Sabretooth, he wins and Sabretooth gets arrested. Wolverine completes his journey of friendship and finding himself… this whole series was designed to lead into the Death of Wolverine series and nothing else.

All New Invaders 9

dgt

The Invaders face off against Deathlok, all of them lol. Some maniac has collected all the Deathloks. This allure of this title is wearing off on me.

Avengers 34

trrtretre

Captain America faces off against Future Iron Man/Kang/blah and travels back to the present to wrangle the Avengers to take out the Illuminati. I am not sure what I was expecting for a conclusion, but this was a little off. Its all just a lead in to the event this fall I think. Nothing more. The payoff better be worth it lol.

Amazing Spider-Man 4.1

dfgfdf

Please. End. Covers are great. Art is interesting. Story is okay. We don’t need another retelling of this.

Low 2

Low_02-1

The story jumps forward several years. The father died in the pirate attack. The surviving son is a dirty cop, who bangs a futuristic hooker and accidentally shoots her in the head. He is now arrested for murder. His mother also receives word that a probe has arrived, a habitable world has been found, and humanity can leave the scorched future earth. I am looking forward to issue 3.

Superman 34

sm_cv34_ds_53ee27ce8bec17-34365579

Superman and Ulysses face off against the machinist. Ulysses also gets to know his parents and we learn more of his back story. This is the “banner” superman title right now, and its great to see Geoff Johns writing some great stuff.

Saga 22

Saga_22-1

Prince Robot IV meets the amazingly huge headed King Robot as Alana and Marco have a massive fight. he discovers that she is on drugs, and has been high in front of the kid. She also discovers that he has become closer to the neighbor. Terrific as always. This comic is tough to beat. If Saga is ever not the top pick, that is a grand comic indeed.

August 20th, 2014

This was a particularly good week. I only bought four new comics, and all were winners.

Wolverine Annual 2014

detail

We are barreling towards “The death of Wolverine” this fall, and this annual issue tells a story of Logan and Jubilee, with baby Shogo, out in the woods for a camping trip. They come across a pack of wolves that Wolverine is a member of (of course he is), and 2 hapless campers wander along, shoot Wolverine, who no longer has his healing factor, kills the Alpha Male of the wolf pack and steal baby Shogo- thinking that the Mutants are monsters that are going to kill the baby. Great, GREAT, artwork and a good tale!

New Avengers 23

New_Avengers_Vol_3_23

As the cover clearly shows, the “Illuminati” have split. Their decision to destroy another Earth has shaken them to the core. They all decide that they would rather die than kill billions, again. The incursion comes, and the heroes prepare for their deaths. Then, nothing happens. No exploding worlds. They try to make sense of it, when they realize that one of their number is missing..Namor. He has created “The Cabal”, a group of villains that will destroy worlds to save theirs. This means trouble. Good stuff!

Stray Bullets: Killers 6

StrayBullets-Killers-06-1-f9701

It is 1987, and Virginia and Eli go to the home of his mentor, whom Virginia calls  “Boogerman”, a model ship builder who she and her cousin had a run in back when they were kids, just before the cousin died. Was Boogerman involved? An okay issue.

Multiversity 1

MULTIV_Cv1_ds-600x922

I thought for sure this would be a stinker. Its been promised since around 2008, and it is finally out. I have no idea what took so long, but it was worth it. There is some crazy grotesque force that is eating the Multiverse. The last Monitor tries to stop it, but is captured. He sends the hero of one of the earths, the Thunderer, to his base, the Multiversity, tor recruit heroes from around the multiverse to stop the threat. I was amazed to see Bloodwynd in there, giving me hope that the “old” DCU still exists. We see the Black Superman, Captain Carrot, and an assortment of others face off against an “Avengers” team, only to see the last monitor has been corrupted and has joined the villains! It was typical Grant Morrisson when he is 100% on the money. When this guy misses, he misses hard, but he pulled this one off. I will be reading this to completion.

The Expendables 3

The 399th Film I have seen in theaters…

EX3-Poster

100 Million for the budget. 16 million opening weekend. Regardless of my opinion, this is the last Expendables picture.

cooltext1616801116

The Expendables break Wesley Snipes out of prison. lol. They then do a job and Mel Gibson is unveiled as the villain of the piece. The team breaks up, Sly finds a younger group to go after Mel, they get captured. Old team reunites to save the kids. Pretty much it.

The Expendables 3 New Banner

There’s a lot of them lol. All deliver hammy acting. The bright spots were:

antonio-banderas

Antonio Banderas is the primary comedy relief in the film, and he very nearly steals the movie. I could watch a whole film on this character.

The-Expendables-3-Mel-Gibson

Mel Gibson, despite his antics, is still a star. He chews through every scene with relish. He is just as a great a villain as he ever was a hero.

It’s not a very good movie, but it is enjoyable enough. There is some stunningly bad dialogue in this, maybe 25% of the jokes work, and most of those are by Banderas. Probably the best of the Expendables films. Take from that what you will.

Comix This Week: 8/13/2014

In the late 90’s, myself and a few friends were avid comic book readers. Every Wednesday we would dutifully pick up our comics at the local shop, read them, and share quick reviews with each other. It was fun and we did it pretty much every week from 1996 to around 2005. We tapered off as some stopped reading, random bouts of apathy intervened, and some of us just lost touch with one another. As this blog has grown over the last 4 years, I feel a need to write more things for all of you to read. So, Comix this week is reborn. Every week there will be a “pick of the week”. I may do a year-end retrospective sometime around new year’s day. I use cover images in my reviews. These images are from various comic companies, such as Marvel, DC, and Image in today’s case. They own this stuff. I do this for fun, not money.Enjoy.

Walking Dead #130

TWD130_cover2

I frequently feel I am at an impasse with this comic. Should I stay or should I go?  I think I have broken through this week, I am staying.

The newcomers to the Community don’t buy Negan’s bullshit attempt to convince them that Rick is evil. Meanwhile, Rick and Carl arrive at the Hilltop, now a thriving town with Maggie as their leader. Carl wants to become a Blacksmith assistant and Rick is grappling with letting his son move away and be independent. I was starting to think that the comic would morph into an old west frontier type of series, and I may be correct, but at the very end we are thrown a curve ball. The Walkers are SPEAKING. Holy shit.

Amazing Spider-Man 5

jyhhh

Black Cat has teamed up with Electro to destroy Spider-Man, but attacking Peter Parker! They figure a good way to draw out Spidey is to threaten to kill his “pal”. What they don’t expect is Silk, the Spider-Woman to attack instead! J.J.J. finally gets back on track this issue as he finds a new niche, and a perfect one at that- loudmouthed talking head on “The Truth Channel”. Awesome.

Captain America 23

dfgfdgfgfdgdfgg

The mysterious armored person breaks into Avengers Mansion, fights and defeats the Avengers and finds Steve Rogers. He reveals himself to be….IAN! Cap’s long lost son from Dimension Z. The old “misunderstanding fight” which ends with them all being friends, is the way he is reintroduced. They team up and charge on Zola! Good issue. I can see why Falcon is becoming Cap, but Ian is a good option as well. Maybe he will become the new Falcon? Or maybe that role is being saved for Jet, Ian’s sister.

Original Sin 7

33424

Nick Fury versus the world. The Avengers fight him on the moon and in space as Nick fights to choose a successor as Earth’s secret Defender/Avenger. Of note in this issue is that he whispers a secret to Thor. Somehow this secret is powerful enough to cause him to drop the Hammer and become unworthy to pick it up. It ends with an army of Watchers about to descend on the moon to, presumably, kick Fury’s ass.

Spider-Man 2099 2

detail

Miguel discovers that his Landlady is dying of cancer. Also, Liz Allen discovers that he is from the future, but not that he is Spider-Man. A set up issue where we get to know more about the characters.

Wolverine 11

wolverine-11-one-month-to-die-cover

Wolverine storms into Sabretooth’s hideout in a battle to save the innocent lives of his former criminal teammates. As Logan moves in, the Avengers/Shield prepare a full out assault. This has been interesting as Logan has come to terms with a lot of things, how to work as a team mate, the importance of friendship, and a reminder of what honor is. Death of Wolverine should be fascinating.

Batman 34

3821130-bm_cv34wm.jpg

After the WAY too long Zero Year storyline, an actual year, we get a current story where Batman is dealing with the imprisonment of Jim Gordon, death of Robin, and the splintering of his Bat-Family as even Dick Grayson is moving on with his life. Batman hits the streets to help Dr. Thompkins with a serial killer that is targeting the homeless and destitute. A surprisingly evocative issue that examines how the problems of the ‘worthless” remain hidden from the public eye, even that of The Batman.

Comix This Week: July 30th, and August 6th 2014

In the late 90’s, myself and a few friends were avid comic book readers. Every Wednesday we would dutifully pick up our comics at the local shop, read them, and share quick reviews with each other. We have a little bit of catch up this week as I was out of town last week. Here we go!

July 3oth, 2014

Low #1

low-cov_web

Rick Remender gives us what appeared to be a riff on Bioshock, but was actually something a bit different. It is the far future, and humanity has retreated under the oceans to survive the expanding sun. A society thrives there where people of a certain bloodline can use these Iron Man style suits to do things. I don’t know what yet, as the series just started, but it is cool enough to give a few more issues.

Iron Man Special 2014

detail

I had no idea what was going on in this one. It is an X-Men crossover that ended up in my pull list because I subscribe to Iron Man. It seems okay though. I won’t be reading part 3, but its okay. hehe.

East of West 14

EastofWest14-Cover-fe77e

The Endless Nation, the highly advanced Native Americans are headed to war, and a new President of the Confederacy is needed. We follow the machinations involved as the Apocalypse approaches.

Avengers 33

avengers33cvr

Captain America is in the far future of 50,000 years from now! Ultron, or what began as Ultron controls the universe. This might be a bad thing, not too sure, but Captain America slaps it with a virus anyway. hehe. An interesting jaunt through time.

New Avengers 21

na 21

Damn. Namor just blew up a planet. To stop the latest “incursion” by an alternate reality, he uses the weapon developed by the Illuminati to blow up the world where that “Justice League” lived. All the other members refused to take the step and become murders. Namor had no such problem. Drama is about to happen.

cooltext1462977738

The Sandman: Overture 3

SNDM_Cv3_text

I wish Gaiman did Sandman more often, but then I remember that it would not be as special. J.H. Williams knocks it out of the park again with his amazing art. This guy might be the best working right now. He takes chances like Steranko did back in the late 60’s. Very Psychedelic, but modern at the same time. This story seems to be heading towards the death of Morpheus. I hope it is not the end, but if it is- what a send off.

August 6th, 2014

Small week, only 2 books. No pick of the week. Each were quite good.

New Avengers 22

dfsds

Yup, the shit done hit tha’ fan. The Illuminati turn on each other in the fallout of Namor’s decision. Damn good stuff.

Superior Spider-Man 32

Superior_Spider-Man_Vol_1_32

Wha?! Huh? In issue 19, there was a temporal explosion. This story takes place in that space. Doc Ock Spidey is transported to 2099 and in his attempts to get home, discovers that there is someone jumping through the multiverse killing off Spider-Men! He begins recruiting members to join his Spider-Army against this enemy! Spider-Man with 6 arms, and Spider-Man Noir are already here, as is Pavitr Prabhakar, the Spider-Man from India! This seems clever and fun, as Spider-Man should be. I will be following, if only to see Superior Spider-Man again.

ALSO:

Superman 32 and 33

Superman-32-Cover-Resized

superman-33-cover

This is a course correction for Superman. The New 52 reboot kinda wrecked one of my favorite heroes. DC has brought Geoff Johns, the man who saved Superman about 7 years ago, and John Romita Jr, Marvel Comic legend of a Marvel Comics family, makes his DC premiere. A great start. They seem to be making an effort to bring Superman back to where he belongs, at the Daily Planet, not “blogging”. These are the variant covers I chose to buy. Both wonderful.
