The 547th film I have seen in theaters…
Let’s be honest right off the “bat”. hehe. Michael Keaton is the reason I saw this. I’ve been waiting for his return since the summer of 1992, and this movie delivered that. The set design was pretty good on the Batcave and Wayne Manor. I couldn’t tell whether they were original shooting locations or not, but it worked. I am sad that we never saw the Batmobile in action, but I’ll settle for the Batwing.
Ezra Miller, the elephant in the room, was ok. He played Barry Allen with emotion and terrific humor. He is likely done as The Flash, but I can’t fault him for his performance in this movie. It worked.
Now, how was it?
5/10
One point is purely for nostalgia. Another is for the humor. Most of the laughs worked for me. What holds it back is a fairly boring/predictable plot and VERY dodgy CGI. The director has said that they wanted to to reflect the weirdness of the “speed force” in the design of the CGI.
Nonsense.
This movie had tremendous meddling behind the scenes by the studio which led to extensive reshoots. These reshoots ate into the budget so they went for a certain cartoonish look for the speed force scenes because it was cheaper. That said, those shitty CGI scenes at the end were pure fanboy magic, so it gets a partial pass.
The final scene was the one true shocker for me, and I thought it was great. This is not the best comic movie ever made, but it is worth checking out in the theater. Just for Michael Keaton.
