The film that “saved” horror movies

The teenagers of Woodsboro, CA are terrorized by a serial killer in a “Ghostface” mask. Can they stop the killer before they are all murdered?

Neve Campbell appears as Sydney Prescott, the central character of this series. It is an iconic performance and earned her a spot, alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, as a top all time “Scream Queen”. She would of course go on to appear in several of the sequels.

David Arquette is Dewey, the slightly dopey sheriff deputy. This would be the first of several appearances as the character. A fan favorite.

Courtney Cox, RED HOT from friends fame, helps get this movie made by agreeing to appear as Gale Weathers, intrusive reporter. Alongside Arquette and Campbell, Cox would go on to become a staple in these movies.

Matthew Lillard is Stu, a memorable role for this guy who would go on the epitomize Shaggy for a generation of Scooby fans.

Rose McGowan is Tatum, Stu’s girlfriend. This is her only appearance in the series but would go on to success on the classic TV show “Charmed”

Skeet Ulrich plays Billy. Aside from Riverdale, this was his highest profile work. Apparently he returned in scream 5 and 6. Who knew? lol

Jaime Kennedy plays Randy, the horror movie geek. I liked this character quite a bit, and it definitely made Kennedy a name in the industry.

Drew Barrymore gets the Janet Leigh treatment, famously so, in this one. She was a big selling point for this movie, so they were able to repeat the “surprise” of killing off the star in the opening of the movie.

This is a classic, pure and simple. When a person of my age looks back the year 1996, Scream stands tall as a central film of the era. This was THE MOVIE to see over Christmas break 1996. It single handedly revived horror as a viable genre at the box office, revived the career of Wes Craven and made Kevin Williamson the hottest writer in Hollywood. It is tough to impress upon you the impact this movie had. That we are now 27 years on and they are still making these movies is a testament to their power.
