The 572nd film I have seen in theaters…
Hitler’s U-Boats dominate the North Atlantic, preventing the United States from aiding Britain in WW2. A daring plan is hatched: enlist the most “ungentlemanly” soldier available to sneak into enemy territory and take out the supply depot for those boats. The first special forces mission.

Henry Cavill leads the show as Gus March-Phillipps, one of the real life inspirations for James Bond. He shines, as always. It is a pity that Cavill will likely never play Bond. Eiza Gonzalez is Marjorie, the female spy used as a honey pot, sort of, for the German commander. Alan RItchson, who is on a fucking tear right now, is the Nazi Hunting Dane- Anders Lassen. Henry Golding is Freddy the frogman, Hero Fiennes Tiffin is Henry the Irishman, and Alex Pettyfer is Geoff Appleyard. The awesome Babs Olusanmokun is Mr Heron while Cary Elwes plays the original “M”, Brigadier General Gubbins. Yes, Ian Fleming is also in the film, played by Freddie Fox.
This was a fun movie. It is not a serious examination of the realities of WW2 or the personal toll paid by the brave soldiers. It is a Guy Ritchie movie. It is fluff. It is entertaining as hell. Good writing, excellent action, and terrific performances make this a must see. I needed this tonight.
7/10
