The 595th film I have seen in theaters…

Spoilers below

Bob Dylan travels to New York City and skyrockets to the height of fame. This chronicles his first few years of his career, up to his adoption of Electric performance at the Newport Folk Festival.

Timothèe Chalamet stuns again, this time as Bob Dylan. I’ve said it before, and I repeat it here; this kid has got the goods. He truly became Dylan here, vanished into the role. Outstanding casting. Ed Norton is a remarkably good Pete Seeger. Elle Fanning was great as Sylvie, Bob’s artist girlfriend and Monica Barbaro delivered a fantastic performance as Joan Baez.

This was a solid biopic. The essence of Dylan was covered and I think it did a fine job of showcasing not only Chalamet’s talent, but the complexity of the subject. I was wondering what James Mangold was going to direct after Indy 5, and this was a nice choice for him. It harkens back to his success with Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.

7/10

This was also my final movie at my local Showcase Cinemas. Opening in 1997, having succeeded the original Showcase location, this is the last of my childhood theaters to close. Hundreds of films were seen there over the last 28 years. It is where I lined up all day to buy tickets to The Phantom Menace in 1999. There are other theaters, a few miles down the road, but this was my MAIN theater. RIP Showcase. It’s been a pleasure.
