The 597th film I have seen in theaters…

Spoilers below

A widow lives in a farmhouse with her two children. As she deals the with trauma of losing her husband, a mysterious woman in a black veil appears sitting in her front yard.

I went into this expecting your typical haunted house/demon type of situation. I was pleasantly surprised to find something deeper happening here. This is a fantastic examination of depression, how we deal with it, and the intrusive thoughts that pop in.

Okwui Okpokwasili is the eponymous woman, and is a wonderful presence in the film, but Danielle Deadwyler is the star. She carries the film handily. I bought the mental anguish of this woman, and that ending! This was very well written by Sam Stefanak, perfectly directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, but the cinematography was fantastic. This makes sense as it was done by Pawel Pogorzelski of Ari Aster fame. Don’t sleep on this one, its a great psychological thriller.
