James Horner (1953-2015)

This has been a sad year for me in regards to one of my top 5 films- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Earlier this year, we lost Leonard Nimoy (Mr Spock), and Harve Bennett- the producer who saved Star Trek when he took over the reigns and made Star Trek II. Now, another central piece of that magic has gone.

James Horner was a phenomenal composer. Despite his many accolades, there is just something amazing about the Khan score. When that film plays, I know nearly every line of dialogue by heart. I can also hum along with every bar of the music. It is perfection. I consider the main theme from Khan to be the best Star Trek theme, topping the original. It captures a great nautical feel, evoking images of Hornblower on the high seas. It is an excellent way to make Star Trek.

A search through his IMDB Page will show you just what a talent we’ve lost. Trek, Avatar, Braveheart, and Titanic just to name a few.

RIP.
