Ready Player One
By Ernest Cline
This book has been floating around me for a few years. One by one, many of my friends read the book and raved. It was the ultimate nostalgia trip. I finally succumbed the other day. It is already finished and I wish it was longer!
Set in a dystopian future (as they do), OASIS is a world-wide Internet Virtual Reality system that started in the 2010’s as an MMO. The creator of the game was a genius, and OASIS became the biggest thing in the world. As the planet turned to crap due to climate change, people retreated into the game. When the creator dies, his website announces a contest. Whoever finds 3 magical keys, and 3 gates, inside the game will be able to collect “The EGG”. Whoever gets the Egg will gain complete ownership over OASIS and a 240 Billion dollar fortune. The world goes ape-shit. 5 years pass with no progress. Suddenly, a young man name Wade finds the first clue. The hunt is on for the EGG and powerful people want Wade to help them find it, or die.
Read this book. Seriously. This is a love letter to people born in the late 60’s-Early 80’s. Ernest Cline is on my radar now. I will follow him soon with his 2nd book- Armada.
This will be released in 2018 as a film, directed by Steven Spielberg. As he is one of the main reasons the 1980’s existed as we know it, this could be amazing.
