The 467th film I have seen in theaters…
Another contender for best film of 2017
It has been 7 months since Angela Hayes was raped and murdered. Her mother, Mildred, dissatified with the progress by the local police, leases three dilapidated billboards outside of town. They question why there have been no arrests. This causes a lot of chaos in the town as the local police deal with the attention.
Frances McDormand is now the front runner for best actress this year. This was powerful work, heartbreaking with equal helpings of humor.
This is one of Woody Harrelson’s best roles. As the local sheriff, dying of pancreatic cancer, Woody shines. Excellent performance.
As he often does, Sam Rockwell steals the show as Officer Dixon, the bumblingly violent racist member of the police force. He is phenomenal.
John Hawkes is the abusive ex husband, now dating a 19 year old caretaker for horses who give rides to disabled people. lol.
Peter Dinklage is the town’s alcoholic dwarf that has the hots for Mildred. The end of the dinner scene was well done. Dinklage is always welcome.
Lucas Hedges, who impressed me in Lady Bird plays Mildred’s son Robbie. After Lady Bird and Manchester by the Sea, Hedges is an actor to watch.
Another actor that has popped up on my radar is Caleb Landry Jones. He plays Red, the guy in charge of the Edding Advertising agency. He’s had a fantastic year, appearing in this, American made, Get Out, and Twin Peaks.
Sandy Martin, Mac’s mom, appears as Dixon’s mom. This lady is one of a kind. I love seeing her in projects.
This has been an excellent prestige season for films. Three Billboards is definitely in the running for Best Picture when the Academy Awards happen in a few months. This had an excellent story, a cast packed with incredible talent, and excellent direction. Not much more to be said. 10/10.
