The 32nd film I have seen in theaters…

Tim Burton brings the classic trading cards to life in one of my favorite movies of the 1990’s

Jack Nicholson appears as the President AND casino owner Art. Jack never turned in a bad performance in his life, so he’s always watchable. Glenn Close plays the First Lady as Natalie Portman delivers an early performance as their daughter.

The B plot follows Lukas Haas and his family including Joe Don Baker as the dad, Jack Black as the brother, and the late great Sylvia Sidney as his grandmother.

Danny DeVito briefly appears as himself, lol. Or rather his typical loud mouthed Jersey character. Always welcome.

Pierce Brosnan is the Government scientist who is trying to reason with the Martians. Sarah Jessica Parker is the reporter he falls in love with. A touching story… lol.

Annette Bening is Casino Jack’s hippie wife. Jim Brown appears as a retired boxer working at the casino and Tom Jones is himself! No, for real. He plays Tom Jones.

In perhaps his greatest role, Michael J Fox is the dashing newsman, Jason Stone. He single handedly saves the day from the devastation onslaught of the Martian menace!

This is not a serious movie. It is not a great movie. It is not Burton’s best. Actually, I can’t say its the best work of anyone in the cast/crew. What it IS, however, is fun. This is simply a fun movie, that doesn’t take itself seriously. I find it incredibly rewatchable, even 30 years later. I was not kidding. This is legit one of my favorite movies of that decade. Its not the best, not even close, but its a favorite.
